River

Gast

The river flows right through the RiverClan-territory and is also their border to WindClan and ThunderClan. It is very wide, and if you want to cross it, you are forced to swim. Reeds and willow trees grow at its bank and big, green meadows can be found there too. In greenleaf, twolegs come with boats and scare all the fish away, but never the less it is still a reliable source of food for RiverClan.

As I reached the river, I stopped at the bank and sat down to wait for Summer. While I was doing so, my gaze wondered around, watching the river flow though its bed and seeing some fish jumping out here and there.
It was a good feeling to live near a river again. In my life, it had saved me several times and was a reliable source of food for me. I couldn't imagine a life without the swimming or the fish or the wonderful feeling of the stream pulling at your pelt.

She reached the river after River did and when she looked to the water, she wondered if River had his name because he loved the river.
Well, she should ask him, hopeful, he wouldn't mind. She sat down next to him und watched the nature, then she began: "River? I'm wondering... your name. Why are you called so?" This was interesting and she looked to the tom cat. He seemed strong to her, he was a leader and made it to create a clan. This surely meant having a lot of work, courage and talent. Yes, she had respect for him.

When Summer sat down next to me, my gaze stayed on the river for a few moments and then wandered to her again as she asked me why I was called "River". At first, I thought of telling her a lie because I didn't really liked to talk about my past. But then I decided to tell her the truth - we were all in one clan now, we had to trust each other.
"The river has protected me my whole life. I respect it and it respects me. And I don't think I could life without having a river nearby.", I told her, and in the end I wasn't even thinking about what I said before saying it. I just said what came to my mind. When I thought about it now, it sounded a bit weird. I laughed a bit and then turned my gaze back to the river.
"So, let's let the swimming lessons begin. Come here.", I said and walked over to a point where the water was shallow and where Summer would have no problems with standing in the river. I walked into the water there and stood a few tail-lenghts away from the bank, smiling at the she-cat.

Summer

She looked to River and was very interested in his story, his past. He began to tell her which importance the river in his whole life till now had. This was understandable for loners, she thought. She didn't need a river in her life herself because she got her food by her housefolk who were reliable as far as the food was concerned. Her mother that lifed still there would have a good life.
Of course she hunted mice and animals like this, but she never depended on them.
When River ended, she wanted to ask more, but he meant to go to swim now, so she nodded and followed him to the water. Carefully she got nearer. In spite of this she wasn't frightened of it, no, it was the opposite, she was excited. She loved such new things!
Her paws got wet and she looked to River. "What now?" She asked.

Although I was very curious about what might have happened in Summers past, she didn't say anything about it, so I didn't ask. Maybe she didn't want to speak about her past and I understood that very well. I didn't like to speak about my past either, so I didn't expect others to tell me their story if I didn't even thought about doing something like that. Maybe I should trust other cats more, now when we were in a clan..
I watched Summer following me into the water and smiled when she was not afraid, no, rather eager to learn swimming. "Look. It is very easy actually, just imagine you were running. kick the water away.", I told her and swam a bit in the shallow water, to show her how she had to do it. Then I came back on my four feet again and nodded towards her. "Now you try."

Summer

She didn't know if she was happy because River didn't ask about her past. Usually she didn't care it because her past hasn't been excitedly or even unusually.
But now he explained how to swim and she concentrated to understand. While he was swimming she watched him and thougt about how to do it herself. It seems to be very easy, but was it really so?
Then he came back and nodded to show her that it was her turn.
She waited a moment to take a deep breath, then she nodded and went deeper in the water and began to make the moves which he did, too.
He meant she should imagine running in the water and should kick it away, but it was much harder than she thought.
She dived into the water and wanted to dive to the air again, but she couldn't. Now she was frightened. How she could come out of the water here?!
Her paws beat around her and finally she got up to breathe, but then she dived into the water again. Where was River? She needed help!

As I told Summer to try to swim herself, I had to smile when she walked into the deeper water. At first, it looked like she would make it and I was just about to tell her that was fine, but then she dove into the water and didn't come up again. I was a bit worried and when she came up a bit but then was pulled down by the river again.
I had to help her! Very quickly I dove into the water and swam to Summer. When I was above her, I grabbed her neckfur and swam to the surface again. There I took a deep breath - what wasn't that easy with all the fur in my mouth - and tried to keep Summer's head above the water surface. After struggling in the water a bit, I came to a point where I could stand and pulled the she-cat to the bank, where I lay myself down. I was exhausted and my breath was quick, but I could still grin a bit at Summer.
"Next time, please stay in the shallow water.", I said, slightly grinning.

Summer

She thought about giving up because her body had no energy any more, but then she decided to fight till she really couldn't do anything more.
The water was heavy and to her it seemed like it pushed her down all the time. It seemed to be as hard as stone, so she couldn't go up.
But then she felt something. Somebody. River? He grabbed her neckfur and swam to another point where they would be able to stay.
Her head was now above the water surface and so she could breathe. Her breath was fast as Rivers, but now they were in safety and she went to an place where it was dry and she laid down.
When she felt stronger again, she meant silent: "I'm so sorry, River... Thank you."

I watched Summer as she went over to me and laid down on a dry spot. I was still grinning a but, but she seemed not so happy. That's why my grin disappeared again and a worried gaze replaced it. But she was probably just still a bit shocked of what just happened.
"It's okay.", I said softly. "For your first swim, I have to admit it was pretty good", now I smiled a bit, hoping that it would make her smile too, maybe.
At this moment, I remembered my very first swim. It had been even more terrible than Summer's. I almost drowned that day. But the river helped me and I survived it - but I wasn't sure if I just had had luck.

She had a bad feeling while she was apologizing, but then he said for her first swim it was good. She looked surprised at him and meant: "So it normal that cats who learn it have to be rescued?" She grinned now, too and her bad feeling disappeared slowly.
"How was your first swim? Did you learn it by yourself?" She sat down in front of him and looked at him interested in what he would tell her now. If he would do it, but she hoped so. She loved it to learn new things or to hear stories she hadn't known before.

I had to smile a bit when I got a suprised gaze from Summer. But that quickly turned into a grin and so I had to grin too. "That's right.", I told her and grinned a bit more. Although I had to rescue the she-cat, I wasn't angry at her at all. No, actually I was really happy right now.
When she asked how my first swim was like, I had to laugh a bit. My first swim had been not really volunteerely, and I almost drowned that day. I had floated in a river holding onto a log and couldn't hold myself after a while, so I fell down and had to swim. It was a miracle that I survived that.
I looked into Summer's eyes, before I started to tell her the story: "I did learn it myself. But I can't say that it was very funny.. I almost drowned." I had to laugh again and smiled at her. Maybe I would tell her the whole story sometime later.
"Do you want to try it again?", I asked her, nodding towards the river.

Summer

She grinned when he meant, it would be right that cats had to be rescued. Well, maybe he was right, but it sounded really strange.
When she asked him how his first swim had been, he started to laugh. She looked confused at him, didn't know why he was laughing. Had his first swim been a very embarrassing experience or something like this?
Be began to tell her about his first swim and when he said he almost drowned on this day, she laughed, too now. It was funny that the same thing happened to him.
Then he asked if she wanted to try it again. She looked to the river, thought about it and nodded then. "Okay, I'll try it."
She stood up, went to the water and slowly went into the river. The water flooded her paws. She stayed there, where she could stand and tried to make the moves which River did again.
Now it worked better, but not perfectly.
Fortunately she was there where she could stay! If she didn't, she would have had to be rescued again!

When Summer said she would try swimming again, I nodded and smiled at her, while she was going into the river again. I followed her and stood at the shore, watching her as she tried to copy my moves in the water. Now she was staying in the shallow parts though.
After a while I walked deeper into the river, until my bellyfur was getting wet. "You do that very good!", I told her, still smiling. "It's not so hard after all, is it?"
I had to admit that I liked that she-cat. She had been sympathic from the moment I saw her the first time. Maybe we could become friends, then I had someone who I knew in RiverClan. But after a while we would all know each other, I believed.

She swam still in the water, but soon she felt that her muscles got tired. Probably she would get used to it if she did it often, but for now, she thought, it should be really enough.
River said she would do it very good, but she didn't reply because her mouth was in the water. But now she went there where she could stand and then answered: "You think so? Well, thanks." She smiled and meant then: "Well, I think when I have got used to it, it will be better and easier." Sie smiled again.
"Can we stop it now? My paws are tired." She hoped he would say yes.

I watched Summer as she swam a bit and then came back to where she could stand. She told my that she was tired and I just nodded. After my first swim I had been tired as well. Swimming could be exhausting if you weren't used to it. But after a while it became a habit and then it was just something normal like walking.
"Of course. You must be tired.", I said and smiled a bit. Then I looked at the river and back to Summer. "Wait here."
I went deeper into the river until I had to swim and then dived unter the water surface. It wasn't a while until I spotted a fish and caught it before it even noticed me. With the slippy fish in my jaws I surfaced and went to the bank, where I laid the fish on the grass. I shook myself a bit, so the water would get off a bit, and then sat down. "Do you like fish?", I asked Summer, grinning.

It was good that River didn't protest or force her to go on swimming. Then he meant she shoudl wait. Summer looked amazed to him and wondered what he was going to do. She hoped it wouldn't be something where she had to do which made her much more tired.
But it doesn't seem like this, but he dived into the water and not long period of time later he came up again, but now he had a fish.
Now she smiled and waited till he came to her und asked if she liked fish. He grinned, so she did it, too.
Then she nodded and meant: "Yes, I do. Well, I had tried it just one time in my whole life yet, but I loved it then more than anything other. Do you it this often?"
